Many of the terms found on Electricity Facts Labels and in Terms of Service documents are in a language all their own. This list of terms, some of which are adapted from definitions provided by the Public Utility of Commission of Texas, can help you better understand industry terms as you shop for electric plans.
Kilowatt is the standard unit for measuring electricity demand and is equal to 1,000 watts.
A unit of energy equivalent to one kilowatt (kW) of power expended for one hour of time and is equal to 1,000 watt-hours. The amount of electricity consumers use each billing period is expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
