Comments: They sent me a letter saying they were changing the terms of service. They were adding processing fees to pay your bill. The letter said if this is not acceptable you may terminate the contract with no early termination fee if done within 14 Days. I called to verify the letter and informed them I would be terminating the contract. I changed to a different company in less than 14 days but still got a bill for a $200 early termination fee.

Comments: Paid all my bills for the entire contract time until I switched at the end of the contract. There was a partial bill left unpaid that I did not know about. Rather than sending me a notice, calling, or emailing me to let me know the unpaid balance, they sent it directly to a collection agency. I was very embarrassed because I never miss a bill. Yes I owed the money and yes I was happy to pay the bill. I'm just very disappointed they did not give me the chance before it got out of hand. Will never do business with this company again.

Comments: I had my 1st payment applied to a previous address and had lots of trouble getting it resolved. I later had a second issue with getting a disconnect notice. I use online bill pay. I sent the payment early as they are not on the electronic system my bank uses. So I sent the payment very early. I receive another disconnect notice. After phone calls and emails with the proof of payment showing it was delivered in time, I am still billed $23 for late payment. I was told the Mail is a problem for them, but it was my responsibility to get payment logged by due date. They were the best rate and that was why I picked them. I will not use them again. The customer service person was rude and told me it was my problem. It will not be after the contract period when I switch.

Comments: $20 late fee is a little excessive and a $1.99 transaction fee to pay your bill on their website. Waiting for our contract to be over to change providers.

Comments: High charges once initial rate period expires and no attempt made to reduce your bill. Customer service on their part could have saved us an average of $78-$110 month this summer and retained our service. However, .1435 per kWh too high compared with the numerous choices available

Comments: I was displeased with the customer service provided when I paid my 1st bill online and didn't see the box stating that there was a charge for paying online. I noticed the box upon completion. They should have something you have to click on to verify that you know you're being charged. The only way to not be charged a service charge is to pay by mail, which I find not as reliable. I asked for a refund since I was a new customer and it was my 1st time to pay and it was an oversight. The customer service rep said that was not possible, that it was a charge made by their bank. Not cool at all. Then I get my 2nd bill days before I needed to mail it to be on time. I had already looked up the bill and mailed it, concerned my payment wouldn't be received in time. They also don't offer the service to send you a bill by e-mail. Due to the two issues, I rated with 3 stars, but don't know if it took. I am very satisfied with the rate and bill...much improved!

Comments: This is an updated review, based on interaction with Summer Energy customer service that occurred after I submitted my original review. My original review is reproduced below. My original review was one star. I have raised my review to three stars based on the average of the original review and the updated review. UPDATED REVIEW ON JULY 18, FIVE STARS: After my initial contact with Summer Energy, a customer service representative contacted my by email and phone and agreed to waive the $2 electronic payment transaction fee that I had complained about. Of course, it would have been better if the first Summer Energy customer service representative would not have been so adamant about not waiving the fee in my circumstances, but I do appreciate the prompt followup from Summer Energy supervisors. ORIGINAL REVIEW ON JULY 14-ONE STAR: My July bill has an invoice date of July 2 and a due date of July 20. Unfortunately, I did not actually receive the bill in the mail until today, July 14, which is only three business days before the due date. Summer Energy's bill states that I should allow 7 to 10 days for receipt and processing of payments sent by mail. I wanted to make sure my payment would be received on time, so I immediately called Summer Energy's customer service line to pay the bill over the phone. Today, July 14, I was told that I could pay over the phone or over the internet, but there would be a electronic payment transaction fee of $1.99 or 1% of the amount of the bill. I explained that the bill had arrived at my house late, and it did not seem fair that I should be charged a transaction fee when I was doing an electronic payment to make sure that a bill that was received late would still be paid on time. The representative, Mary, reading carefully from her script, said the electronic payment transaction fee cannot be waived under any circumstances. She was both adamant and condescending. What should we think about a company like Summer Energy that would choose to lose a reliable customer (who always pays his bill on time!) in order to collect a one-time $2 transaction fee? Of course, I will make sure this bill gets paid on time, whether or not I have to pay the stupid $2 transaction fee. But my contract expires in two months, and I will not renew with a company that thinks my business is worth less than $2.

Comments: UPDATE: I would like to update my previous review. UPDATED REVIEW submitted July 18: After I wrote my original review reproduced below, I was contacted by a supervisor in Summer Energy's customer service department within just a few hours. Summer Energy agreed to waive the electronic payment transaction fee and have arranged to email me copies of my bill to avoid having a similar situation arise in the future. Summer Energy deserves much credit for acting very promptly at the supervisory level to resolve my complaint; however, the problem should not have occurred in the first place, and after it occurred, the first representative I spoke with should have been more willing to consider the possibility of waiving the fee. Instead, she adamantly insisted that the fee could not be waived Once I spoke with a supervisor, the electronic payment fee was waived, and I paid the bill (on time as I always do). However, this process took up, not only some of my time, but also wasted time of several Summer Energy supervisory personnel. All in all, I received a fair resolution of my complaint. However, the problem never should have occurred and the initial response should have been more accommodating under circumstances. I have raised my rating from one star to three stars, which is the average of the one star original response and the follow up five star response. Comments: There does not appear to be a way to get notified via email that a new bill has arrived. Consequently, it becomes incredibly easy to miss a payment if you want to pay using your bank's bill pay system in order to avoid the extra fees of paying through summer energy's website.

Comments: It is hard to rate a service like energy on anything other than price. So far, the price is great. The main problem I have with Summer Energy is paying my bill. They are NOT USER FRIENDLY for the following reasons: 1. You CAN NOT set up automatic bill pay with your bank. With other providers, they would send the amount to my bank and the bill got paid. With Summer Energy, you have to get the bill and do it manually every month!! This is not impossible but inconvenient since the bill date varies from month to month. 2. If you want to pay on a credit card, they charge you a fee, even if you want to set it up as an option for automatic bill pay to make sure they get paid on time. I did not learn about their billing practices until after my 30 day cancellation period ended. WARNING: Check out other providers who charge the same rate for electricity to see if they are more user friendly in their billing department.

Comments: I have been with Summer Energy for six months with no issues. I have decided to renew again because their six month rate was the second lowest for my usage level and I am already set up with an account and automatic bill pay.To me it's not worth changing for less then a cent per kilowatt. I very pleased with Summer Energy.

Comments: Summer energy was a great price when i set it up. easy to pay bill on line. the reason for 3 stars is because when my contract expired my bill skyrocketed i couldn't upgrade my plan online it gave an error every time i tried. Other wise i would have stayed with summer

Comments: So far so good. I chose Summer as they had 3 month plans at lowest rate. Since my previous contract expired in June, I wanted to reset for Septmeber renewal so a 3 month plan was what I wanted. The billing is great. Only 3 line items and it so straight forward, I wish Ambit would have done the same. I signed up thru Truecost and the price I was quoted is exactly what I am paying.

Comments: Great Company, they don't nickel and dime you with fees and their bills are correct and they have automatic bill pay and they mail a paper bill with no extra charges. Been with them almost two years. When I went to renew on line, afterwards they called me back and gave me a lower rate. Too bad they don't have any current offerings on TruCost because they are a good provider.

Comments: I appreciate the good rate from them but you need to watch your bills. A while back they billed me a disconnection charge that I had to call to have removed. (I'm on autopay and never had an issue) Now, I renewed and they quoted me one rate ($.09) and billed me a different one($.14). Just pay attention and it might be a fine way to get a good rate for service.

We asked a few questions of Angela Hanley, Senior Vice President of Operations and Marketing at Summer Energy:

What makes Summer Energy stand out? “We're a new company, but our key personnel hail from other local companies such as Gexa Energy and StarTex Power. Collectively, the leadership team has more than 36 years of retail energy experience. Rod Danielson, our CEO, previously served as Gexa Energy's chief supply officer, managing the same functions in the Texas, Massachusetts and New York markets.”

What about your electric plans?  “Even though we recently jumped into this market, we’re making a big splash with competitively-priced, fixed-rate plans of three- to 24-month terms. Very few surprises with our bills, just a base monthly charge and one utility fee in each monthly bill. Our base price includes everything else.”

What makes your customers happy?  “Our customers enjoy low fixed rates with simple, straightforward plans. Customers can make payments via web or phone call at no additional charge.”
