I relocated to Houston about a year ago. Moving from Minnesota was not only eye opening from a lifestyle and cultural perspective, it was also a complete surprise to find that I had to select an electric provider. Since Minnesota isn't a deregulated electricity market, this was a new concept for me.
When I was apartment shopping, each complex I visited provided me with tenant information along with a piece of paper listing one electric provider's name on it. They never mentioned that said electric provider was the preferred provider, but let's be honest; they didn't give me a full list of available options, either. I figured there must be bias folded up in there somewhere.
If I hadn't known better and didn't put in the effort to do a quick online search, there's a strong chance I would've just gone with whatever provider they recommended. But I consider myself a smart shopper, and that's how I stumbled upon a handful of shopping sites available for consumers to find an electricity provider.
I found that using an independent shopping site is probably the most important part of the decision making process. I can see different plans from different providers and compare rates without any bias. TrueCost stood out by not only showing me the advertised rate, but more importantly, what my estimated monthly total cost would be for each month. I mean, that IS probably the most important part for budgeting, right? Everything was transparent and I knew I didn't have to worry about calculating the extra fees and taxes on my own.In conclusion?
- Remember, you have the option of shopping for the best price.
- You should know your monthly costs with all taxes and fees included upfront Ask yourself if you are okay "shopping" on a site that really doesn't allow you to see real costs.
So, I urge you to use myTrueCost.com
